ARLINGTON, Texas -- Haven Meged had one last chance to make a splash at the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and on Saturday night at Globe Life Field, the 2019 tie-down roping world champion did just that.
Meged, the Miles City cowboy, won the final go-round of the tie-down roping in 7.4 seconds, collecting a $26,321 paycheck on the final night of the Super Bowl of Rodeo. Meged wound up seventh in the world standings with more than $141,000 earned this season.
Shad Mayfield is the new tie-down world champion, winning by a mere $231 over Marty Yates.
It was that kind of up-and-down week for Montana athletes in Arlington, where the Treasure State natives were shut out of world titles.
Hailey Kinsel walked away with the barrel racing championship. Kinsel and her horse, Sister, scored 170.95 seconds on 10 runs, winning the average and finishing the year with an astounding $349,076 earned. It was the third world title in as many years for Kinsel, who won five rounds and won an NFR-record $270,615.
“They’re all so equally different in so many ways,” Kinsel said in a PRCA release about her world titles. “The first one being a dream that you know is there. The second being you know what it really feels like. And the third, being this year and being as crazy as it was, it was more than just a want. It was something, I set goals. It doesn’t fulfill everything for you, it doesn’t just completely bring you all the joy in the world, but it dang sure helps. To be able to pull it off this year with all the craziness we went through and the hard times in my life and to be able to rise up from that and do something so awesome here is not something I could have planned.”
“They ask if she knows how special she is, and absolutely she knows she’s special to me, but I don’t think she knows she’s done a great thing,” Kinsel continued of her horse. “I think she just has a great time. That, for me, is the most important thing. She loves it, she continues to love it, she has a blast out there. She doesn’t do it for anything I do it for. She does it because she thinks I asked her to and she likes me.”
Circle native Lisa Lockhart, now of South Dakota, was last in Round 10, dropping her to the same mark in the average. She finished No. 8 in the world standings.
Stevensville bareback rider Richmond Champion finished eighth in the world standings, grabbing $142,123 on the season. The Montana cowboy didn't ride in Saturday's final round.
Kaycee Field became the third bareback rider to win five world titles, capping the championship with an impressive 91-point ride on Saturday night.
Deer Lodge saddle bronc rider Chase Brooks also rounded out the 10-day event with an eighth-place finish, scoring $150,034 this season. Brooks was third in the average and earned almost $45,000 for the effort. Wyoming's Brody Cress was third in the world standings.
Ryder Wright rode five go-round wins to the saddle bronc world championship.
A long week ended with no score in the team roping competition for cousins Clay and Chase Tryan. World-champion Clay ended the year No. 9 ($140,540) in the heading department, while Chase was 14th in heeling ($90,145). Clay and partner Jake Long finished 12th in the average, while Chase and header Brenten Hall were 14th.
Team roping partners Colby Lovell and Paul Eaves won the final round to secure their heading and heeling world championships.
Jacob Edler won the steer wrestling championship, which Helena cowboy Ty Erickson won a year ago, while Stetson Wright won both the all-around and bull riding titles.
