Haven Meged leads NFR tie-down average, projected to win world title

LAS VEGAS — Haven Meged hasn't done anything spectacular at his first National Finals Rodeo - he's just been the most consistent calf roper. But that might lead to the biggest spectacle of all.

The 21-year-old from Miles City moved to No. 1 in the NFR tie-down roping average Tuesday night, after an 8.1-second run in Round 6 pushed him past Taylor Santos, who struggled to a 10.8. Meged now leads the projected world standings race, meaning if the rodeo ended Tuesday night and the average payout was factored in, he would win the PRCA world title.

Meged has clocked between 8.1 and 8.7 seconds in every round of his first NFR, placing in three of them. Former world champion Shane Hanchey looks like his biggest competition with two round wins and three other top-five finishes this week, but his no-time in Round 2 has him sitting just ninth in the average. Meged would earn an additional $67,000 for an average win.

Montana's other world title threat coming into Tuesday was Helena heeler Chase Tryan. Header partner Brenten Hall broke the barrier in Round 6, turning the pair's 4.4 seconds into 14.4, but the only two other pairs who had caught all their calves so far missed, leaving Tryan and Hall at No. 1 in the average. However, it brought World No. 1 heeler Jade Corkill up to the third in the average, which means Tryan has ground to make up.

It's been a rodeo to forget for Ty Erickson. The Helena steer wrestler came into the National Finals with a big lead atop the PRCA world standings but has placed in just one of six rounds after his 4.4 Tuesday night didn't earn him any money. He has now officially dropped to No. 2 in the world.

Butte's Bridger Chambers has fared much better for the second straight year, earning his fourth round check with a 4.0-second run Tuesday, good for fourth.

Corvallis bareback rider Caleb Bennett continued his strong run Tuesday with 88.5 to split the go-round win. He has cashed in five of six rounds - the only miss being a buckoff in Round 2. Richmond Champion didn't place in Round 6 with 84 points, but he still sits third in the average.

Wyoming's biggest title hope is in saddle bronc. Brody Cress scored 85 points in Round 6 to split fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place money. It moved him up to second in the average with 506.5 points on six head, just two points behind Rusty Wright as the only two to cover all six broncs so far. World No. 1 Zeke Thurston was bucked off in Round 6, allowing Cress to creep closer to the lead.

Tuesday's full results, as well as the updated average and world standings, can be found below.

Round 7 is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. MST.
