KANSAS CITY - Reigning PBR Rookie of the Year Boudreaux Campbell (Crockett, Texas) won the elite PBR Unleash The Beast Caterpillar Classic at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City this afternoon with the bull riding equivalent to a walk-off grand slam.
Teaming for a trip that would yield both the high-marked ride of the season and top bull score to date for the 2021 campaign, Campbell covered 2020 ABBI (American Bucking Bull Inc.) Class Champion Woopaa (Barker Bulls/Hookin’ W Ranch) for a monstrous 95.5 points to clinch the victory at the seventh premier series event of the year.
Going a flawless 3-for-3 at the 18th annual PBR event in Kansas City, the surging Texan earned a critical 143 world points and a check for $27,636.74.
Campbell skyrocketed 39 positions in the world standings, surging from No. 53 to No. 14. He now trails No. 1 Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas), who finished second in the event, by 304.5 points.
The 22-year-old’s march to his first regular-season Unleash The Beast victory began in Round 1 when he delivered the second-best score, an 88.5-point effort atop Hard Shot (Glover Cattle/D&H Cattle Co.).
As one of the final riders to erupt from the chutes in Round 2, Campbell rose to the top of the event leaderboard when he made the 8 aboard Dr. Campbell (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) for 86.75 points.
With the first pick in the championship round bull draft, Campbell then selected a bull known to propel riders to victory in momentous fashion – Woopaa.
The striking bovine athlete first made a name for himself at the 2020 PBR World Finals when he was covered by Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) for a head-turning 95.75 points in Round 3. The score not only clinched the 2020 PBR World Championship for Leme, but also secured the 2020 ABBI Classic Championship for Woopaa.
Most recently, Woopaa and Leme again teamed for an impressive score, this time going the distance for 94.75 points in Fort Worth, Texas, as Leme won the event title.
With the socially-distanced crowd inside T-Mobile Center brought to the edge of their seats in anticipation, the chute gate burst open, and Campbell matched the powerful bull jump-for-jump, producing a 95.5-point score.
While the score was career-defining for Campbell, now the high-marked ride of his career, it was also a crucial out for Woopaa, netting the bull his career-best score.
Earning a season-best 47.25-point bull score and the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event honor, Woopaa rose to the top of the 2021 YETI PBR World Championship Bull race. Now tied with Chiseled (Flinn/D&H Cattle Co.) for the No. 1 rank, Woopaa holds a 46.33-point world average. The duo of bovine athletes leads No. 3 Smooth Operator (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) by 1.08 points.
Extending his lead atop the world rankings 2016 PBR World Champion Davis was second, netting 97 world points and $15,994.08.
Davis, who also went 3-for-3, reached the championship round after riding Black Sunshine (Hodges/Shuler) for 87.25 points in Round 1 and Lil Hott (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Stinger/Brunner) for 83 points in Round 2.
Attempting to become just the seventh multi-time PBR World Champion in league history in 2021, Davis then architected a showdown of titans, drafting the No. 1-ranked bull in the world – Chiseled.
Davis previously covered the D&H Cattle Co. standout for 92.75 points in Greensboro, North Carolina, in October 2019.
He again made the 8, this time for a giant 94 point-score, and was atop the championship round leaderboard until Campbell’s ride. The 26-year-old has now registered four 90-point rides in 2021, tied with Leme for the most of any rider to date on the Unleash The Beast.
Davis, who began the event 48.5 points ahead of No. 2 Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) extended his lead atop the standings, now 65 points out front.
Despite losing ground to Davis, Pacheco put up a hard-fought effort in Kansas City to finish third.
Pacheco, the final rider to be a perfect 3-for-3, secured the bronze finish courtesy of an 87-point score on Ground Assault (Stockyards/444/Winston/Melton Bull Co.) in Round 1, an 85.25-point ride on Crazy Times (Hart Cattle Co./Randy Wood) in Round 2, and an 89.5-point effort aboard Hocus Pocus (D&H Cattle/Almand/Lone Star/Outlaw) in the championship round.
Pacheco earned 80.5 world points and $11, 246.42 for his efforts.
Making his second return from injury during the 2021 season, Leme was fourth, delivering two 90-point scores to claim his second Top-5 finish of the year.
Leme first succumbed to injury at the season-launch event in Ocala, Florida, fracturing his right ankle after he was bucked off by Dirty Sancho (Blake Sharp/Koe Wetzel/High Voltage Cattle) in 2.75 seconds in Round 1. Sidelined for three events, the reigning PBR World Champion returned to competition in late February in Fort Worth, winning the tour stop but also breaking two ribs when he squared off against Rooty Tooty (Viducic Bucking Bulls) in Round 2.
Missing just one event due to his latest injury, Leme resumed his quest to become just the second back-to-back PBR World Champion in league history in Kansas City.
Leme began the PBR Caterpillar Classic in top form, winning Round 1 with a 90-point ride aboard Knee Deep (Stockyards/444/Winston/Gallagher/Melton). While he was bested by his second draw, bucked off by Outlaw (Hart Cattle Co./Hale) in an uncharacteristic 1.57 seconds, Leme concluded the event with his fourth 90-point ride of the season, covering Top Shelf (D&H Cattle Co./Gordon/OK Corralis) for 91.75 points.
Having gone 4-for-7 thus far in Unleash The Beast action in 2021, all of Leme’s qualified rides have been marked 90 points or more.
Leme left T-Mobile Center having netted 68 world points and $11,834.85. He is now ranked No. 6 in the world, 252.5 points behind No. 1 Davis, after beginning the event No. 14.
Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Dener Barbosa (Paulo de Faria, Brazil), earning 34 world points.
Barbosa went 2-for-3, riding Hurts So Good (Cord McCoy/David Wolfe) for 86.25 points in Round 1 and Dirt Gangster (Halpain Bucking Bulls) for 73 points in Round 2, only bested by Blue Crush (Cord McCoy/Chad Reese), who brought him down in 4.69 seconds in the championship round.
The 26-year-old gained four positions in the world standings, cracking the Top 10 as he climbed from No. 11 to No. 7. He now trails the No. 1 position by 272.67 points.
The PBR Unleash the Beast will next travel to Louisville, Kentucky, and the KFC YUM! Center for the PBR Louisville Invitational. The event will be on Saturday, March 27 at 6:45 p.m. EDT and Sunday, March 28 at 1:45 p.m. EDT.
Elsewhere in the PBR, nine-time PBR World Finals qualifier Shane Proctor (Grand Coulee, Washington) won the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s Pensacola Invitational at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Going a perfect 3-for-3, Proctor’s rides were registered aboard Turbo Blast (Tom Baker Bucking Bulls) for 83 points in Round 1, Wine Time (JQH Bucking Bulls – Skip & Elaine Jones) for 84.5 points in Round 2, and Cido 545 (Rockin R/Jim & Shannon Barr) for 89.5 points in the championship round.
Proctor’s flawless performance earned him 37.66 world points. He is now ranked No. 40 in the world, 21.34 points outside of the Top 30 and a seeded position on the elite Unleash The Beast.
