CODY, Wyo. — Orin Larsen couldn’t quit smiling after he competed in the bareback riding during the second performance of the 100th Cody Stampede.

The Inglis, Manitoba, native had the high-marked score of his eight-year career as a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Larsen rode Frontier Rodeo Company’s horse Make Up Face for 93 points, setting an arena record that had been in place since 2013.

Ty Breuer, of Mandan, N.D., was the previous record holder with a 91. Larsen is currently second in the PRCA world standings. Utah’s Kaycee Field has a $10,000 lead, and Larsen is hoping to close the gap.

He is entered at several rodeos over the Fourth-of-July and then will be headed to his native Canada for the Calgary Stampede. Hopefully he starts his trip north of the border with a Cody Stampede championship.

“It would be really cool to win the 100th, especially after setting an arena record,” Larsen said. “This is such a great rodeo. I’ve never had much luck here in the past so it’s nice to turn that around.”

With half of the score coming from the rider and the other half coming from the horse, Frontier Rodeo has an animal athlete to be very proud of also. Make Up Face who gave Larsen the opportunity to be 93. The horse was selected for the bareback riding at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). It was not Larsen’s first encounter with the big gray gelding, but it was his best.

“I’ve been on him a couple of times before,” Larsen said. “But we didn’t click like we did tonight. He was outstanding tonight and that was a lot of fun. There was a lot of electricity in the air tonight and I think we both (Larsen and the horse) fed off of that.”

Another happy bucking horse rider arrived at the Cody Stampede needing to see the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. Cort Scheer from Elsmere, Nebraska broke some ribs about three weeks ago, took a little time off, but didn’t want to miss the lucrative rodeos held over the Fourth.

As soon as he got to Stampede Park, he headed to Justin’s mobile training unit and had them tape his ribs for extra support. With their help he rode like he was 100 percent at the second performance of the rodeo and took the lead in the saddle bronc riding.

Scheer, who has six NFR qualifications to his credit rode a horse from Canadian stock contractor C5 Rodeo named Bad Intentions. When the judges added up their scores, Scheer was the new leader with an 88.5-point ride.

With two more performances left of the 100th Cody Stampede, all of the arena records are in jeopardy. Contestants are doing everything they can to add their names to the history books as the champions at the centennial celebration.

The third rodeo performance of the Cody Stampede starts at 8 p.m. on July 3, 2019
