SAN ANTONIO – A year ago, Josh Frost left the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo with an Xtreme Bulls championship and an extra $31,500 in his pocket.
While the rodeo wasn’t so good to him last year, this year he has already won over $10,000 and is looking to add to that Friday and Saturday nights. The bulk of Frost’s earnings came in the AT&T Center on Thursday night when he rode Powder River Rodeo’s bull named Hocus Pocus for 90 points. The Randlett, Utah, resident was one of two men to have qualified rides. Frost’s share of the nightly purse was a cool $7,000. Brady Portenier from Caldwell, Idaho was the other successful bull rider. Portenier scored 85.5 points and earned $6,000.
Both of these men competed in the first round of Semifinals 2 on Thursday. They have their second round in the semifinals on Friday night. The top five money earners in each event will advance to Saturday night’s championship finals. Frost leads the pack with $10,500. Portenier is in second place with $8,750. While their positions could change, their participation in the finals is assured based on how much money they have each already won.
They will also be competing at the Xtreme Bulls competition Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Neither of them has competed at rodeo’s Super Bowl, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas — yet. Portenier finished just one spot out last year at 16th. Frost has watched his older brother, Joe Frost, compete in Las Vegas the last five consecutive years. He was 24th in the world standings in 2018 and hoping to be among the top 15 next December.
A year ago, he was focusing on finishing his education. While he was competing here, he was flying back and forth to Utah to student teach. That is behind him now. When he hangs up his bull rope, he can fall back on his education and teach others as an agriculture instructor.
Semifinals 2 concludes in the AT&T Center on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
