SAN ANTONIO – Bull rider Scottie Knapp made a statement at the fifth performance of the 2019 edition of the San Antonio Rodeo.

The Edgewood, N.M., resident rode Cervi Championship Rodeo’s bull named Big time for 90 points 00 the highest score so far at this year’s rodeo. Knapp qualified for the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finished the season as the sixth man in the world. The next two years, he finished outside the top 15 and didn’t get to compete at rodeo’s championships.

He’s on a mission to be back in Las Vegas next December and if he keeps riding like he did in the AT&T Center on Sunday afternoon, he will be a contender for the 2019 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world championship. Knapp is currently 30th in the world standings.

This was the second round of Bracket 2’s competition. He didn’t make it to the eight-second mark in the first round and has one more bull to get on Monday night. The random draw has Knapp getting on a bull named Roulette, from Powder River Rodeo and D&H Cattle Company.

Knapp received $2,500 for his ride on Sunday. That alone could get him a spot in the semifinals here, but a successful ride on Roulette would be money in the bank and help him in his quest to win a San Antonio Rodeo championship. This year’s prize money is over $1,6 million and winning a title and a portion of that money will give contestants a boost in the world standings.

Last year’s steer wrestling and tie-down roping champions also had success on Sunday. Dakota Eldridge from Elko, Nevada, earned the steer wrestling title in 2018. He finished in a tie for third place Sunday and needs another check Monday to have a chance to defend his title.

Ryle Smith from Oakdale, California, finished fourth on Saturday and tied for second on Sunday. He has total earnings of $2,375 and is the second on the money list in the tie-down roping. He also will be looking for another check on Monday night to assure him a spot in the semifinals and get a chance to defend his title.

Rodeo action will continue in the AT&T Center with the third round of Bracket 2 on Monday night at 7 p.m., where semifinals qualifiers in all of the events will be determined.
