Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s 76-year run at Will Rogers Coliseum ends Saturday

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 8, 2019) — The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® ends its 76-year run at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth on Saturday with the final two of 29 performances.

Preliminary rounds of competition end during the Saturday matinee and those results set the 12-contestant field for Saturday evening’s championship finals in all seven events.

As the final day grew closer, the first and second round of competition ended in bareback riding on Friday. The round winners were Steven Dent of Mullen, Nebraska, whose 88-point ride took the first-round lead last Sunday afternoon, and Canadian Clint Laye, who scored 87 points this afternoon on Dakota Rodeo’s Suga Boom Boom, to win the second round. Each earned almost $3,300.

Dent has finished competing here and his overall score was not enough to qualify for the championship round. Laye, who calls Cadogan, Alberta, home, will climb on his third-round horse Saturday afternoon needing a score in the high 80s to make the finals.

Four-time world champion Kaycee Feild of Genola, Utah, was the only rider to earn a check in the first two rounds. He tied for second in round one and split seventh and eighth in round two for a little over $2,200 total earnings.

Another Canadian named Laye moved into a second-place tie in the overall steer wrestling standings Friday night. Clint’s cousin Brendan Laye of Consort, Alberta, wrestled his steer to the ground in 4.3 seconds, giving him a total time of 8.3. That tied for second with Josh Clark of Warner, Oklahoma, who also competed Friday night. Both men will be back for the final round.
Clint and Brendan Laye are part of a rodeo dynasty in Canada that includes 2018 Reserve World Champion Steer Wrestler Scott Guenther – their cousin from Provost, Alberta – and at least three members of the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Clint is a former qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo who just missed returning to Las Vegas last December and Brendan is the 2018 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rookie of the Year in steer wrestling.

None of the barrel racers were able to move into the overall standings on Friday night, but there were several changes on Friday afternoon. Jennifer Sharp of Montgomery, Texas, who finished third in the first round, clocked a time of 16.36 to take the lead in both the second round and the overall standings. Sharp was the first to complete two runs in less than 33 seconds at this year’s rodeo.

Four runners later, reigning world champion Haley Kinsel of Cotulla, Texas, and her palomino mare Sister passed Sharp for the second-round lead with a time of 16.33. Sharp still held the overall lead until Sydni Blanchard of Pueblo, Colorado, came through the gate. Blanchard’s time of 16.51 was only good enough to put her in eighth place in the second round, but her overall time of 32.73 bested Sharp by 11 hundredths of a second.

Joe Frost of Randlett, Utah, and Foster McCraw of Grimes, Texas, moved into second and third respectively in the bull riding overall standings Friday afternoon. Frost’s score of 80.5 on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s bull named Go Texan was the best of the performance and gave him a total of 165. McCraw’s total of 164 put him behind Frost and ahead of J.T. Moore who had held first or second place overall since January 26.
