FORT WORTH — It’s been five years since bareback rider Steven Peebles won the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo championship and the legendary championship buckle that goes with it.

Peebles, from Redmond, Oregon, went on to win the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s world championships the next year. Since then he has been plagued with injuries and has missed qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Healthy now, he is hoping to change that and came one step closer to accomplishing his goal in the Will Rogers Coliseum on Sunday and Monday. Peebles rode his first horse here on Sunday afternoon scoring 80 points. He improved with every ride. Sunday night he was 83 and for his third horse on Monday afternoon, he got an 84.5.

He is making plans to return here on Saturday night to compete at the championship finals. Peebles is at the top of the overall standings with 247.5 points on three rides.

“Fort Worth has been good to me in the past and it seems like I always do pretty good here,” Peebles said. “I was looking forward to coming here this year. I got on three nice horses and I’m excited at how it all worked out. Hopefully it continues.”

Three other bareback riders moved into top spots in the overall standings as well. Caleb Bennett, from Corvallis, Montana, and his traveling partner Richmond Champion from The Woodlands, Texas, are tied for the second spot with 246 points. R.C. Landingham from Hat Creek, California, was here on Monday and is tied with Kaycee Feild, from Genola, Utah, who competed here on opening weekend. They each have 245 points.

Team ropers Cory Kidd V of Statesville, North Carolina, and Logan Medlin of Tatum, New Mexico, took the overall lead on Monday afternoon with a time of 10.1 seconds on two runs. This rodeo could be very important for them as they are both trying to qualify for their first NFR. Last year, they each finished 24th in the world standings while roping with other partners. The new partnership started with some success at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver in January and they are hoping the momentum continues for the rest of the season.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues Tuesday with performances at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.
