FORT WORTH — Three steer wrestlers and a former world champion from Canada highlighted the action on Tuesday at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® in Fort Worth.
Brothers Baylor and Baxtor Roche of Tremonton, Utah, and Idaho cowboy Bubba Boots took center stage in the steer wrestling. Baylor Roche, the 2015 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Champion, knows what it takes to win here. Although his time of 6.2 seconds was out of the money in the second round, he moved into fifth overall with a total of 11.7.
His younger brother Baxtor drew the biggest cheers from the crowd when he turned in the fastest time of the rodeo. He took the second-round lead with a time of 3.5 seconds. A no-time on his first steer kept Baxtor out of the overall standings, but he stands to win nearly $6,000 if he keeps the lead through February 9. That is certainly possible since the winning time in the first round was 3.7.
Bubba Boots from St. Anthony, Idaho, the athlete with one of the most “cowboy” names on the roster, clocked a time of 4.0. That put him second to Baxtor in the round and third in the overall standings with 9.3 seconds on two steers. Boots is a three-time qualifier for the College National Finals Rodeo in both steer wrestling and team roping.
Zeke Thurston of Big Valley, Alberta, used consistency to tie for the overall lead in saddle bronc riding. The 2016 world champion has made two 84-point rides to match Sterling Crawley of Stephenville, Texas, with a total of 168. Thurston is second in both rounds
The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues with at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum. Twenty more rodeo performances over the next 11 days will determine which rodeo athletes qualify for the championship finals on February 9.
