FORT WORTH – Dillon cowboy Tristan Hansen won the ninth bareback performance Tuesday in Fort Worth scoring 78.5 points. He also scored 82.5 to share third place in the second round.

Meantime, steer wrestler Jesse Brown’s road to the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo has taken many twists and turns.

The Baker City, Oregon resident grew up on a ranch, which could lead to rodeo competition. Instead, he focused his athletic prowess on other sports. In high school he played football, basketball and baseball. He started college at Washington State University where he was a walk-on quarterback. That lasted for three years, then he got tired of football and decided it was time to put his cowboy skills to use. He transferred to Montana State University where he qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in the steer wrestling as a senior.

The next step was joining the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. In 2017, he was the best steer wrestler among the first-year members and won over $15,000.  Last year, he nearly tripled his earnings and finished 33rd in the world standings with $44,153. He competed in the Will Rogers Coliseum for the first time and didn’t have any luck.

He came back this year, hopeful that things would be different. So far, that is panning out. He had his first-round steer during slack last week and stopped the clock in 4.1 and got a check.

He came back here on Wednesday night and was 4.9 seconds. His total of 9.0 seconds is currently third overall and he has the potential to return Fort Worth to compete in the finals.

“These steers are fresh and that gives everybody a chance,” Brown said. “This rodeo is so cool. It’s traditional and has a lot of history. Just competing here is awesome. I just hope I get to come back for the finals.”

While winning is important to barrel racers, their first goal here is to qualify for the progressive round. There 212 members of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association entered at this year’s rodeo. They all run once with the hope of being among the 70 fastest times that get a second opportunity.

Ivy Conrado, from Nowata, Oklahoma, knows all about that strategy. She won this rodeo here in 2016 and qualified for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Conrado was riding her AQHA/WPRA horse of the year, CFour Tibbie Stinson “Tibbie” then. On Wednesday night, she came blazing in on a palomino mare KN Fabs Gift of Fame that they call J Lo. They stopped the clock in 16.58 seconds and are now tied for fourth in the first round.

Conrado’s position in the round may change, but her opportunity to run again will not. If she wins here again in 2019, she will be the second WPRA member to win titles in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum twice and the first to do it on two different horses. Kelly Maben from Spur, Texas won here in 2006 and 2008.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues with at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum. Twenty more rodeo performances over the next 10 days will determine which rodeo athletes qualify for the championship finals on February 9.
