(FWSSR media release)

FORT WORTH – The start of a new week at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo meant a new set of cowboys and cowgirls were competing at Will Rogers Coliseum.

Marcus Theriot of Poplarville, Mississippi, the former National Intercollegiate Rodeo champion, wrestled his steer to the ground in 4.5 seconds. That tied him with South Dakota’s Jace Melvin, who competed Sunday, for the overall lead and for second place in round two. Both men have times of 8.6 seconds on two steers.

Jennifer Sharp of Montgomery, Texas, is on a roll. On Sunday Sharp won nearly $12,000 in the barrel racing at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver. She rode her horse Six French Smooches to the championship winning the championship round and having the fastest overall time.

She then headed to Fort Worth where she and “Smooches” clocked a time of 16.48 to lead in the first round here by one-hundredth of a second. The top 70 racers from the first round earn the chance to compete a second time, with the top 12 overall qualifying for the championship finals on February 9.

Sharp, who moved into the lead in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) world standings after her big win in Denver yesterday, is making the most of her momentum. A strong showing here could boost her chances to qualify for her first National Finals Rodeo in December.

Another rodeo athlete who is making the most of his opportunities is bull rider Dallee Mason of Weiser, Idaho. Mason earned more than $13,000 last week here in Fort Worth when he was crowned the champion of Bulls’ Night Out, the two-night Xtreme Bulls competition. Tonight, he was one of only two cowboys to record a score in the bull riding. It was a big one – 89 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s King Herod to take the first-round lead. He’ll compete on his second-round bull Tuesday night.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues with at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum where the rodeo will be part of the Stock Show Goes Pink Day where exhibitors and spectators alike will wear pink to celebrate survivors of breast cancer. Fifty percent of stock show general admission and rodeo tickets will be donated to the Greater Fort Worth affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
