GLENDALE, Ariz – Following two days of non-stop action at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Brazilian riders topped the leaderboard of the season’s third premier series event. Veteran rider Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected his first PBR (Professional Bull Riders) elite tour win of the 2019 season at the PBR Unleash The Beast, Ak-Chin Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires.

Earlier in the evening Vieira rode Red Sails in the Sunset (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/ Clay Struve/ Heald Pro Bulls) for 82 points in Round 2 before conquering Shelley’s Gangster (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/Clay Struve/ Shelley Cadzow) in the championship round for 87.5 points.

After going 3-for-3 over the weekend, Vieira earned 460 world points, to make an impressive climb from the No. 117 spot in the PBR world standings to No. 6, along with a paycheck of $34,185.

The victory is Vieira’s first on the elite tour since 2016, winning the September stop in Colorado Springs, and ninth overall in his career.

Vieira is now 1,307.5 points behind 2017 PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) who holds tight to the No.1 spot in the world standings. Lockwood, who started the season on fire by winning both the season opener in New York City and the stop the following week in Chicago, had his perfect 10-for-10 riding streak stopped when he was bucked off Deep Water (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/ Clay Struve/ Heald Pro Bulls) in Round 2 Sunday evening.

Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) finished second overall with a 2-for-3 performance. After choosing Wicked Stick (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/ Clay Struve/ H&C Bucking Bulls) in the championship round, Leme recorded the weekend’s only 90-point ride when he made the 8 for 90.5 points. In Round 2, he had conquered In For Life (Hart Cattle Co./Clapp Cattle) for 87.5 points to win the round. The young Brazilian moved from No.3 in the world standings to No. 2 while earning 380 world points and $21,180.

Lucas Divino (Nova Crixas, Goias, Brazil), who entered the weekend at No. 21 in the world standings, secured a third-place finish after going 3-for-3 at Gila River Arena, moving to the No.6 spot in a tie with Vieira. After riding Red Man (Windy Valley Buckers) in Round 2 for 84.5 points, the young rider put it all on the line by selecting Big City (Plummer /Hart Cattle Co.) in the championship round in hopes of recording the first elite series win of his career. Although his 83.5-point ride was not enough to top Vieira, he collected 320 world points and $10,983.33.

Rubens Barbosa (Iaciara, Goias, Brazil) and Claudio Montanha Jr. (Pacaembu, Sao Paulo, Brazil) tied for fourth place in the Grand Canyon State. Both riders collected 155 world points.

Despite being bucked off Gangster Can Do (Dakota Rodeo – Chad Berger / Clay Struve/ Ken Barnhard) in Round 2, Barbosa conquered Soup in a Group (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Wilks Ranch) for 85 points in the championship round to hold strong at the No.5 spot in the world standings. Barbosa earned a $8,433.33 paycheck for the weekend.

Montanha Jr. made the 8 aboard Roulette (KB Bulls / D&H Cattle Co) in Round 2 for an 86.25-point ride score. The Brazilian cowboy was not medically cleared to compete in the championship round after a wreck with his bull earlier in the evening. He collected $6,325 and is fourth in the world.

Chase Outlaw (Hamburg, Arkansas) rode Road Rash (Wallgren Bull Co./Hale) in Round 1 on Saturday for 85.5 points and also dominated his Round 2 bull Cool Customer (D&H Cattle Co.) on Sunday for 85.75 points, but was bucked off Bottoms Up (Hart Cattle Co.) in the championship round. The red-hot Arkansas Cowboy finished 11th and is third in the world standings, 1,087.5 behind Lockwood.

The YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event was Fearless (D&H Cattle/Buck Cattle/Tommy Julian) who exploded from the chute and dispatched Barbosa in 2.12 seconds during the 15/15 Bucking Battle, earning a bull score of 45.5.

Action from Round 2 and the championship round can be seen in its entirety on-demand at RidePass.com or via the RidePass mobile app starting on Monday, January 21 at 8 a.m. ET.

In other PBR news this weekend, Aaron Kleier (Clermont, Queensland, Australia) had the fans at Moda Center on their feet at the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event Saturday evening as he went a perfect 2-for-2 to win the Portland Classic. Kleier started the night with an 83.5-point ride atop Amped Up (Corey & Lange Pro Rodeo) in Round 1. The young cowboy, who currently sits atop the PBR Australia leaderboard, recorded the only qualified ride in the championship round Saturday night, making the 8 on Double Down (Corey & Lange Pro Rodeo). He earned 170 world points and a $7,900 paycheck. In addition to winning his very first PBR event on U.S. soil, the Australian also earned an invite to the upcoming Unleash The Beast Mason Lowe Memorial at Enterprise Center on February 15-16.

The Top 35 bull riders in the world will now head to Sacramento, California, for the Sacramento Invitational at Golden 1 Center January 25-27.
