CHICAGO – Nothing can stop Jess Lockwood right now.
The 2017 Professional Bull Riders world champion won his second straight event to begin the 2019 PBR season Sunday, with a 90.5-point championship round ride aboard Rising Sun to win the Chicago Invitational. Lockwood earned 640 world standings points for the win to put him ahead of second place by almost 1,000 points just two events into the season.
The 21-year-old from Volborg is the first rider since J.B. Mauney in 2007 to win the first two regular-season elite tour events.
“Gosh, I just feel so good right now,” Lockwood said. “I feel like I’m firing on all cylinders and I’m back to the form I was when I won the world title. But I also know it’s early in the season and there’s like 26 more events to go. I just have to take it one bull at a time, one event at a time and as long as I do my job I’ll continue to be successful.”
Lockwood has ridden the first 10 bulls he’s attempted so far in 2019, including two re-rides in Chicago. Just like Saturday, Lockwood was given a re-ride option Sunday after his first ride. He scored 76.25 points, which would have been good enough to get into the finals, but Lockwood wanted a bigger score and got it – 88 points aboard Deaconator for second in the round, putting him in first heading into the short-go.
Chase Outlaw scored 90.25 points on Big Black to take the overall lead two riders before Lockwood, who needed 88.5 to win the event. The 90.5 marked his second best score of the year, only behind his 91.75-point ride in the short-go of his win in last week’s PBR event in New York City.
Lockwood earned another $41,280 for the Chicago win, putting his 2019 total already at $164,130 in just two weeks.
The World No. 1 has earned 1617.5 points so far this year. Outlaw is second with 630 points.
