LAS VEGAS – Cort Scheer put Monday behind him quickly.
The Nebraska saddle bronc rider, who competed on the Montana State rodeo team for a year in 2007-08, responded to his Round 5 buck-off by splitting the Round 6 win at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Tuesday with an 89.5-point ride aboard Sue City Sue.
“I had drawn a great horse and had a good spur out, and she got better and better,” he said. “I was 90 at Houston on her earlier this year.”
Scheer has won $92,712 at the Finals through six rounds (averaging $15,452 in winnings per night). He’s also third in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $194,554. Reigning world champion Ryder Wright continues to lead the standings with $243,194.
The win moved Scheer up to No. 3 in the world standings and No. 4 in the NFR average, just half a point behind second place. Defending champion Ryder Wright is No. 1 in the world, but Wright sits just seventh in the high-paying average race.
Scheer’s former Montana State teammate Chase Tryan also had a good night in Round 6. The Helena heeler and partner Bubba Buckaloo took second place with a 4.4-second run, worth $20,731 each.
Chase’s three-time world header champion cousin Clay Tryan didn’t fare as well, earning a no-time for the third straight round to fall into last place.
It was disaster for a third former Bobcat in steer wresting, as Helena cowboy Ty Erickson’s steer stopped as soon as he left the shoot, leaving Erickson with a no-time and pulling him out of world title contention. Butte’s Bridger Chambers couldn’t get into the money Tuesday with a 6.1-second mark, but he does stay fourth in the average.
First-time NFR qualifier Chase Brooks of Deer Lodge earned his third check in six nights with an 89-point ride aboard Smoke Ring Tuesday, his best ride of the rodeo so far. It earned him third place worth $15,654.
Corvallis resident Caleb Bennett earned his third check with an 87-point ride aboard Night Fist. That split fifth and sixth and kept Bennett eighth in the average.
Former Circle barrel racer Lisa Lockhart struggled again in Round 6, as she could only manage a 13.97-second run. Lockhart won Round 2, but hasn’t placed in any of the other five.
In bull riding, Edgar’s Parker Breding earned his second check of the rodeo with 86.5 points on Monte Walsh. That was good for fifth place and moved him up to third in the average as one of only three riders to cover four bulls so far. Breding remains No. 2 in the world behind Sage Steele Kimzey, who was bucked off in Round 6 to slip to seventh in the average.
Round 7 is set for Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. MDT.
