Montanans continue to make noise in Round 5 of NFR

LAS VEGAS — Round 5 at the NFR got started with the bareback and the riders did not disappoint. All but one rider went the full eight seconds, which meant the competition for the top spot was most definitely earned.

Clayton Biglow took home that top spot with a 93-point ride, while Richmond Champion came in second with an 88.5.

World leader Tim O’Connell did not make any money after an 86 on Monday night but did remain No. 1 in the world. Butte resident Caleb Bennett notched a 78.5 and did not finish in the money. Bennett remains No. 2 in the world, but is now ninth in average.

Helena steer wrestler Ty Erickson was looking to improve after a 4.2 on Sunday night and looked solid in Round 5 with what appeared to be a 5.6. However, it was determined that Erickson broke the barrier and he limped to a 15.6-second finish. Erickson is now seventh in the average and sixth in the world.

It was a much better night for Bridger Chambers. The Butte resident earned big time money with a 3.7. That was good for third place on Monday night. Will Lummus, who is currently first in the average, won the round with a time of 3.3.

The Tryan cousins, Clay and Chase, had no luck in Round 4, and their bad luck continued on Monday. Both Clay and Chase took no times and now have a lot work left to do if they are to make noise in Vegas. Clay Smith and Paul Eaves sit at No. 1 in the world after winning Round 5 with a 3.8.

The saddle bronc riders were the stars at the halfway mark. Wade Sundell, Rusty Wright and Zeke Thurston all registered 90-point rides or better. Sundell was the best with a 92. Former Montana State Bobcat Cort Scheer came into the night 4 for 4 and looked well on his way to 5 for 5 but was bucked off after 7.22 seconds. Scheer is now fourth in the world. Brody Cress, who stole the show at last year’s NFR, finally got his first qualifying ride with an 83.5.

Circle’s Lisa Lockhart just missed the money in Round 5. She finished seventh with a time of 13.91. The winner, Ivy Conrado, sped around the barrels in 13.49.

Parker Breding and the bull riders finished the night. The Edgar native was bucked for just the second time in five rounds. Breding remains second in the world standings behind leader Sage Steele Kimzey.

Round 6 of 10 is scheduled for Tuesday night at 8 p.m. MST.
