BUTTE – Opening night of the NRA Finals started Thursday at the Butte Civic Center, and every competition brought in the top 10 competitors from all over the Montana, Idaho and Wyoming areas.

The take-home purse for each of the winners to be crowned on Saturday is definitely a big factor to the intensity, focus, and excitement of the riders and the fans enjoying the event.

The first event of the night was bareback riding, and taking home the Day 1 win with a score of 76.5 points was Darby’s George Gillespie.

The next event was steer wrestling, and Dillon’s Carson King took down his steer in a time of 4.7 seconds, which was good for the Day 1 win.

Wrapping up our Day 1 coverage was the women’s breakaway roping. Speaking to the difficulty of this event, seven out of the 10 competitors finished with a no-time scores, because they couldn’t lasso their steer before time was up. One of the three who did was Cardwell’s Quinn Briggs, who roped her steer in an impressive 2.8 seconds.

Day 2 starts Friday at 7 p.m.
