Missoula Stampede Rodeo rides at Western Montana Fair

MISSOULA – A tradition more than 100 years old continued a the Western Montana Fair Thursday night. The Missoula Stampede Rodeo came out of the chutes for the first of three nights.

Kenny Haworth of Orofino, Idaho came up with the first victory of the Stampede, scoring 80 points in bareback on Blues Man. No other cowboy topped 73 points on their attempts.

Brendan Laye of Consort, Alberta, Canada was the only cowboy to break the five-second barrier in steer wrestling, winning the round in 4.6 seconds.

Montana cowboys picked up wins in the next two events. Browning’s Nolan Conway and Cut Bank’s Casey Bird worked together to top the team roping round in 5.3 seconds. Travis Nelson of Broadus edged out a couple challengers in saddle bronc, scoring 78 points on Dinner Party.

The Missoula Stampede continues with performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Western Montana Fair.
