HELENA — Tom White opened a four-stroke lead after the opening round of the 2018 Men’s State Seniors Tournament on Tuesday, carding a 67. The three-day tournament is hosted by Green Meadow Country Club, Bill Roberts Golf Course and Fox Ridge Golf Course.
White’s Day 1 score bested Craig Hurlbert of Rollins, Ron Ramsbacher of Missoula and Mike Majors of Helena, who each shot a 71. Defending freshman and overall champion Brett Bennyhoff of Great Falls is 11 strokes back with an opening-round score of 78. Bennyhoff defeated Monty Kuka, also of Great Falls, by a single stroke in 2017.
Four golfers are tied for fifth after shooting 72s on Tuesday — Bozeman’s Timothy Haas and Lee Levine, Peter Benson of Billings and Daniel Mahoney of Butte.
Golfers, all 55 years and up, are divided into four divisions during the tournament — freshmen, sophomore, junior and seniors — with champions crowned in each division. The lowest overall score will crown the Senior Men’s champion on Thursday at Green Meadow Country Club.
According to the Montana State Senior Golf Association, more than 330 golfers signed up for the event, the 64th annual.
