BUTTE – The city of San Jose, Calif. is about to get a dose of Mining City baseball this week.
The Butte Junior League all-star baseball team took home the Montana state championship on Monday in Billings. The boys from Butte rallied back after losing their first game of the tournament to capture the crown and advance to the regional tournament in San Jose. If they run the table in San Jose, they will advance to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan.
The boys credit their success to their willingness to play as a team and pick each other up at all times.
“I think we work really good together because we’re all friends,” said Butte all-star Quinn Cox. “And there’s no tension, we all help each other and pick each other up if someone does something wrong.”
But being able to play for the Mining City and showcase their baseball culture on a bigger stage will definitely add some surrealism to their time in California.
“It’s awesome. It’s really an honor to be able to go and represent Butte, Montana in California and play baseball,” added Jonas Sherman.
The team is still short on their $25,000 fundraising goal, and if you would like to donate a link to the team’s GoFundMe page can be found here: Help send the boys from Butte to California.
