Billings Mustangs complete sweep of Voyagers with 3rd straight win

BILLINGS — The Billings Mustangs (6-11) completed the two-game series sweep of the Great Falls Voyagers (5-10) on Tuesday with a 5-1 win in front of 2,266 at Dehler Park. It was the Mustangs’ third consecutive win, their longest win streak of the season.

Miguel Medrano (1-0) delivered his third one-hit performance of the season in his first four starts, throwing five innings of shutout baseball, striking out a season-high seven batters and walking one.

The Mustangs got all of their scoring done in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs on four hits. Matt Lloyd hit a solo home run, his third straight game with a homer, with one out in the inning. The home run started a streak of five straight batters to reach. James Free tripled with the bases loaded to score three and came in on Quincy McAfee’s sacrifice fly to follow.

Great Falls came up with their only run of the game in the seventh on a sacrifice to right to score Luis Mieses who led off the inning with a single and an error advancement.

The Mustangs’ pitching staff combined to strike out 13 batters and not issue a walk for the second straight game. Johnnie Schneider struck out a season-high five in two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.

The Mustangs and Voyagers now head to Great Falls to begin a three-game series at Centene Stadium. First pitch on Wednesday in the series-opener is set for 7:00 p.m. MDT.
