Editor’s Note: Helena Brewer’s Press Release
HELENA — Today the Pioneer League announced that four Helena Brewers have been selected to the 2018 Pioneer League All Star Team. Catcher David Fry, first baseman Chad McClanahan, outfielder LG Castillo, and pitcher Wilfred Salaman were voted into the game by the Pioneer League All Star selection committee. Fry will be the starting catcher and Castillo one of the three starting outfielders when the Pioneer League All Star team takes on the Northwest League All Star team on Tuesday August 7th at 6 PM at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, CO.
A 7th round selection this season out of Northwestern State University, Fry has been the epitome of consistency since arriving in Helena. The Colleyville, TX native currently leads the team with a .314 batting average, seven home runs and 28 RBI. He has drawn 21 walks in 34 games, helping him garner a .418 on base percentage. Fry is the only Brewers player to homer in multiple games this season. He will also be participating in the Home Run Derby.
Castillo was selected in the 17th round of the 2017 draft out of Lancaster High School near Buffalo, NY. He turned down an offer to play both football and baseball at the University of Oklahoma in order to sign with Milwaukee. He spent all of last season with the AZL Brewers, playing in just 12 games, but this season in Helena he has played in all but eight games, hitting .306 with five home runs and 27 RBI. Castillo is second on the team in RBI and third in home runs. He holds the longest consecutive RBI streak this season at six.
McClanahan makes the All Star team in his second season with Helena, having been the only Pioneer League player to play in every game in 2018. Currently he is hitting .302 with six home runs and 26 RBI, second and third on the team respectively in those categories. The 2016 11th Round selection out of Brophy High School in Phoenix, AZ leads the team with 21 extra base hits, including a team leading 12 doubles. McClanahan played in 63 games with the Brewers last year, hitting three homers while driving in 30 runs.
Salaman makes the All Star team with a 3-1 record and a 2.58 in seven starts for Helena in the first half. Prior to his July 24th start against Ogden, Salaman had completed at least five innings in every start, allowing two or fewer runs. The Puerto Rican native had allowed just three earned runs total in his first 29 innings in a Helena uniform. Salaman is in his third season in the Brewers organization, signing out of Carl Albert State College in 2016 as an undrafted free agent.
