HELENA – The most Montana sport ever conceived will be taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Lewis and Clark County Fair Grounds: skijoring.

If you have never seen or heard of the sport it’s pretty cool. A skier is pulled behind a horse down the run, best time wins. It’s kind of like water skiing without all that cushy water.

Friday some of the pros put on a clinic for some of the greener contestants singed up for the weekend. Judging from the enthusiastic crowed that showed up, the sport is growing.

“This is the first time, frist time ever we’ve had the skijoring here in Helena,” said sport division national champion C.R. Kunesh. “It’s a national sport now, we’ve got it all over, I think it’s in six or seven states. It’s in Canada, Europe. So it’s starting to get a lot of national recognition. This is our very first one here. It’s just another race that’s in our circuit more or less, just like a rodeo circuit. This is just one more and then we have another seven to go until the last race in Red Lodge in March.”
