(DCC Athletics release)
GLENDIVE – Dawson Community College Athletic Director Joe Peterson on Monday announced the addition of an Athletic Hall of Fame at DCC.
“We are excited to look back over the long, rich history of Buccaneer Athletics and honor some of the outstanding individuals and teams who have left a legacy here,” Peterson said.
This year DCC is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its athletic department. It was 1958 when the first Buccaneer basketball team took the court. Twelve years later, women’s basketball began, followed by rodeo two years after. Bbaseball and softball programs have been on campus for 21 years while volleyball has competed for seven seasons, with a brief hiatus. Cross-Country is new starting this year. DCC also had a successful track program a few decades ago.
A Hall of Fame Committee comprised of seven former players, coaches, athletic directors and contributors has already been selected and have met to come up with the guidelines and process. The mission of the Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame is to give appropriate recognition to players, teams, coaches, athletic directors or individuals who have made outstanding contributions in Intercollegiate Athletics at Dawson Community College while reflecting positive values and traditions of the institution.
There are 4 categories for nominations:
1) Student-athlete- eligible 10 years after their final season at DCC and must have left in good standing.
2) Coach or Athletic Director- eligible 5 years after their final season at DCC
3) Contributor- someone who has shown outstanding service with longevity for DCC athletics
4) Team- eligible 10 years after the season they competed
Anyone is welcome to nominate a deserving team or individual directly on-line at http://www.dawsonbucs.com/information/Hall_of_Fame_Nomination_Form or you can email Joe Peterson at jpeterson@dawson.edu.
Nominations are due September 1. This year’s honorees will be officially inducted during a basketball game in the upcoming season. Nominees not selected this year will be considered subsequently for up to three years, and if not selected, will go inactive. Nominees can be re-nominated.
This is a part of DCC’s mission to foster a culture of excellence and the college is excited to honor the individuals and teams who have achieved excellence in athletics over the past 60 years.
