GLENDIVE – Bryce Maxson, from Capital High School in Helena, MT is Coach Ben Sandy’s first recruit to sign with Dawson Community College’s new cross country and track programs.

He started running in the 8th grade with his friends, who Bryce said ended up quitting and leaving him alone which he was okay with because this left little distractions for him to deal with. As a result, Bryce found the true meaning of running, which is running from the heart.

“In my time running I’ve learned it’s not just putting one foot in front of the other, but it’s running with a purpose,” said Maxson, “and that purpose for me is to make my family proud of who I am.”

Bryce comes to Dawson after three cross country and four track seasons with Capital High School. His experience as a cross country runner and his mental toughness as a track runner will prepare him well for his college running career. His personal best times are 5k-16:46, 3 miles-16:18, 3200m-10:23 and 1600m-4:42.

“I chose DCC because I feel it’s the right decision for me sports wise and academic wise as well,” Maxson said. “I feel like Coach Ben knows how to coach me and help me become a faster and stronger runner. Coach Ben also talked to me about being a student before an athlete which really stood out to me because it showed he wanted his runners to be successful in the classroom as much as on the course!”

“Bryce is the type of athlete every coach looks for,” said Sandy about his first signee. “He is motivated to improve, he enjoys the sport, and he is eager to learn. I am pleased Bryce will be running for Dawson and I look forward to coaching him to many more personal bests as well as passing on my knowledge of the sport to him. Bryce will be a strong leader and teammate for the Buccaneers!”
