PORTLAND, Ore. – With a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at last week’s W.A.R. XI meet in Spokane, Wash., Yellowjacket senior Jorey Egeland earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week honors the conference announced Monday. It is the second time Egeland has won league recognition for his outdoor performance in his career, and he is the first ‘Jacket to earn the recognition during this outdoor season.

Pacing a time of 9:19.96 in the 3,000 steeplechase, Egeland led a field of 23 athletes by over 23 seconds. The time ranks as the fourth-best in the conference this year and is just short of the provisional mark of 9:17.36.

“At the end of the race we were a little surprised, not that he won, but at just how far ahead of the field he was,” head coach Jonathan Woehl said of the dominant performance. “He started fast and no one was catching him. He didn’t let the rain or cold bother him and even kept up his pace after splitting his spikes open. It was an impressive performance all around.”

It was Egeland’s first time running the steeplechase since his third-place finish at last year’s conference meet. He is the fourth Yellowjacket to earn Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors this season with Sam Zook, Michaela Johnson and Nikki Aiken gaining the recognition during indoor competition.
