BILLINGS – A total of 35 Montana State University Billings student-athletes were recognized as members of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society on Wednesday evening during a ceremony at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Among the 35 award winners were 20 first-time recipients, who were inducted on Wednesday. Thirteen more students were recognized for the second straight year, and two fifth-year seniors were honored at the event for the third time.

Status within the Chi Alpha Sigma society is reserved for athletes of at least junior academic standing, who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or higher while competing in a varsity sport.

Women’s soccer juniors Jordan Devoto and Lili Delgadillo had the two highest GPAs within the 2018 inductees, holding marks of 3.97 and 3.93, respectively. MSUB’s baseball team had the most new inductees with five, and junior Steen Fredrickson was at the top of his team’s list with a 3.85 GPA. MSUB’s women’s track and field team had four inductees, and three from the Yellowjacket women’s basketball team were also inducted on Wednesday.

Jarod Paul of the MSUB baseball team, a returning member of the organization, had the highest overall GPA among the 35 honorees with a perfect 4.0.

Alisha Breen of the MSUB women’s basketball team and Adam Cox of the baseball team were the two individuals to be recognized for a third year, after being inducted to Chi Alpha Sigma during 2016.

About Chi Alpha Sigma: The nonprofit organization, founded in 1996, is designed to recognize NCAA and NAIA college athletes who stand out academically. It was established by former DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis with the intention to create a fraternal association among outstanding student-athletes to share their success both on and off the field.

MSUB is the lone school in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with Chi Alpha Sigma membership, and is one of just six schools in the NCAA Division II west region to honor its student-athletes with the award. The University of Montana Western is the other institution in the state of Montana to hold membership within Chi Alpha Sigma.
