LAS VEGAS, N.M. – On their first official road trip of the season, the Dawson Community College Women’s Softball team split two games with Luna Community College on the field of New Mexico Highlands University.
DCC lost game one 7-9, but the Lady Bucs were able to hold off a strong comeback by Luna in game two, 13-12.
Game #1
Dawson Community College Softball fought back after falling down by five runs in the third inning. The comeback fell just short though, in a 9-7 defeat to Luna on Friday. Dawson managed six runs in the failed comeback. Kateyln Teixeira, Wyniah Mintz, and Hailee Gregerson fueled the rally with RBIs.
The Lady Bucs was right in it until Luna doubled in the sixth inning.
Luna got things moving in the first inning. Ortega drove in one when she tripled. Lady Bucs tallied five runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by doubles by Mintz and Gregerson and a walk by Teixeira. Luna scored three runs in the second inning. Rocha and Ortega all drove in runs in the frame. Ortega led things off on the hill for Luna Community College. She lasted four and a third innings, allowing ten hits and six runs while striking out two and walking one.
Mckenna Sorenson started the game for DCC. She went six innings, allowing nine runs on 15 hits and striking out three.
Buccaneers scattered 12 hits in the game. Jayden Draper, Trinity Anderson, and Wyniah Mintz all collected multiple hits for Dawson. Anderson and Draper each collected three hits to lead the Lady Bucs.
Luna Community College tallied 15 hits on the day. Medina, Rocha, Ramirez, Armijo, and Ortega all managed multiple hits for Luna Community College.
Game #2
Dawson Community College Softball built a seven-run lead in the third inning and then held off Luna Community College’s charge for a 13-12 victory on Friday. Luna Community College managed ten runs in the failed comeback. Armijo, Pineda, Salcedo, Ramirez, Pineda, and Rocha picked up RBIs to lead the rally.
Dawson grabbed an early lead. Lady Bucs scored on a groundout by Reannon Justice in the first inning, a single by Kylee Hergenrider in the first inning, and a stolen base by Katelyn Teixeira in the second inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, Luna tied things up at two when Medina singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. After the Buccaneers scored four runs in the top of the seventh, Luna answered with four of their own. Dawson scored when Teixeira singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, Justice doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, and Mckenna Sorenson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Luna Community College then answered when Pineda singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and Roch singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Lady Bucs pulled away for good with one run in the second inning. In the second, Quintana’s wild pitch allowed one run to score for Dawson.
Dawson put up six runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught by Dawson was led by Reannon Justice, Lexi Pettersen, Trinity Anderson, and Sidra Montoya all knocking in runs in the inning. Hailee Gregerson was on the mound for the Lady Bucs. She went five and a third innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits, striking out two and walking zero.
Quintana toed the rubber for Luna Community College. She lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out two. Valtierra and Guidry entered the game from the bullpen, throwing four innings and one-third of an inning respectively.
Lady Bucs racked up 17 hits in the game. Teixeira, Anderson, Pettersen, Justice, Snyder, and Montoya each had multiple hits for DCC. Teixeira led Dawson Community College Softball with three hits in four at bats. Luna Community College collected 13 hits on the day. Medina, Pineda, Ortega, and Rocha each managed multiple hits for Luna.
