GLENDIVE – Winning the ball game on February 15th was delightful, but the event that took place that night was even better.
The DCC Women’s Basketball Team defeated Dakota College at Bottineau 80-67 and raised money for the Play 4Kay Kay Yow Cancer Fund. And they did it in “Pink” fashion.
The Kay Yow Cancer Foundation is in partnership with the V Foundation and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Hall of Fame basketball coaches Kay Yow and Jimmy Valvano of North Carolina State University left a legacy in the sports world and beyond. Both coaches’ lives were taken by cancer and now, in their honor, sports teams and others joining forces, recognize annually their passion for the game and saving people’s lives by raising money and awareness for all cancer research.

The Dawson Community College Lady Buccaneers took part in the annual awareness campaign this past week by raising $1,670 with the help of students and staff of DCC, community members and men’s basketball. DCC promoted their game, hosting its 4th annual Play 4Kay night. Many local businesses in the Glendive community and campus donated over 100 prizes for the raffle tickets being sold by each Lady Buc. Raffle prizes were sold during both women’s and men’s basketball games, and there were prizes being awarded continuously throughout the night. The event was also promoted through social media, press releases, flyers and other related media outlets. The DCC Associated Student Body decorated the Toepke Center Commons with an arch rainbow statue of pink and white balloons. Women’s Basketball plastered the entire gym with a variety of pink ensembles of decorations: official game basketball, nets, scorer’s table, bleachers, walls and the upper deck track. The players wore pink warm-up shooting shirts and socks as well as the coaches. Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. wore his shirt and pink shoelaces along with pink fingernails and a pink earring.
Coach Lagmay said, “It has always been a true honor to be a part of the national campaign in raising money and awareness to breast cancer and other related cancers. I’ve been involved the last 12 years in the Play 4Kay initiative, and it plays close to home as my mother survived breast cancer twice.” Fans were encouraged to attend and were able to get free admission if wearing a significant amount of pink apparel. Coach Lagmay went on to say, “I really do thank the community’s efforts in coming together and supporting the cause and making it a very productive night and being a part of something really special.”
