Missoula Big Sky sets the tone at Western AA seeding tournament

MISSOULA — Home mats proved beneficial for the Missoula Big Sky wrestling squad on Saturday. The Eagles crowned four individual champions to lead the way for the Western AA teams.

Kalispell’s two schools, Flathead and Glacier, each saw three wrestlers win medalist honors, while Helena High earned a pair of champions.

Tobias Martin won an all-Big Sky championship at 103 pounds, defeating teammate Tony Silveria in a second-period fall.

Hunter Meinzen added a win for the Eagles at 145 pounds, a 16-1 technical fall over Missoula Sentinel’s Blake Jolma, while Dougie Swanson defeated crosstown rival Bridger Hall of Missoula Hellgate at 152 pounds. Swanson earned a 9-2 decision.

Wyatt Shinn was the final champion for Big Sky, capturing the 182-pound crown.

Flathead, the defending State AA champion, saw Brendan Barnes, Fin Nadeau and Tanner Russell win championships at 126, 132 and 170 pounds, respectively.

Glacier’s champions were Cody Frost (113 pounds), Colby Martin (205) and Tre Krause (285).

The top eight finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in Billings, which begins Friday at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
