THOMPSON FALLS — The Eureka Lions won three consecutive championship matches and four overall to earn the Western B/C divisional wrestling championship on Saturday. The Lions racked up 202 points to defeat No. 2 Florence-Carlton (148 points) and third-place St. Ignatius-Charlo (135.5).
Defending state champion Gunnar Smith opened the Lions’ championship round with a 2-0 decision at 120 pounds over No. 5 Roman Sparks of Thompson Falls, then Kyle Durden’s pinfall at the 3:17 mark of the 126-pound title bout over Thompson Falls’ Shane Reishus added to Eureka’s point total.
Nathan Schmidt won a hard-fought 9-5 decision against Conrad Vanderwall of Plains-Hot Springs at 132 pounds to give the Lions a trio of championships.
Last year’s state runner-up Hank Dunn capped Eureka’s individual titles at 145 pounds by way of a 10-3 decision against Darwin Adams of St. Ignatius-Charlo.
Florence-Carlton earned its second-place trophy with Oliver Post’s 103-pound title. The sophomore pinned Taylor Angle of Plains-Hot Springs in 1:13. Avery Meinzen capped a quick 20-second pin over Eureka’s Gavin Pilkington at 160 pounds, while top-ranked 205-pounder Spencer Jones needed only 1:13 to pin Miles Anderson of St. Ignatius-Charlo.
Other divisional champions included Josiah Vanderwall of Plains, the No. 3 138-pound wrestler in Class B/C, and Isaac DuMontier of St. Ignatius-Charlo (152 pounds). His teammate Isaiah Alik won the 170-pound championship.
Team scores and individual placer results can be found below. The top four individuals in each weight class are guaranteed a trip to the state tournament in Billings next weekend. State will be held at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark beginning Friday morning.
