Bozeman tops Class AA wrestling poll entering Tom LeProwse invitational

BUTTE — As the Bozeman Hawks prepared to host the 2019 Tom LeProwse Battle in the Bridgers wrestling tournament, the defending Class AA runner-up was ranked No. 1 in the first coaches poll of the new year.

Bozeman, which boasts a pair of No. 1 individual wrestlers — Leif Schroeder at 132 pounds and Chance McLane at 152 — had nine wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes in the poll.

Billings West entered 2019 at No. 2, with defending state champion Jace Rhodes top-ranked at 170 pounds. Fellow Golden Bear Levi Malcom is the No. 1 heavyweight in Class AA. No. 3 Butte also has a pair of top-ranked individuals — 103-pound Keagan Gransbery and Kameron Moreno at 205 pounds.

Great Falls High, Helena Capital and Billings Senior round out the top six teams in the poll.

The two-day LeProwse invitational began Friday morning with wrestlers from all classifications in attendance.

A Hi-line native, Richie Melby enjoys telling the stories of Montana athletes, coaches and teams. Richie got his start in TV at KTVQ in Billings and worked as the Sports Director at KRTV. After a couple of years in Tucson, Ariz., Richie returned to his home state as the Sports Director at KTVH.
