BUTTE — After edging Great Falls High 37-30 on Tuesday evening, the Bozeman Hawks sit No. 1 in the first Class AA wrestling poll of the 2018-2019 season. The polls were released on Wednesday.

The Bison followed the Hawks in second place, while Butte is ranked third in the opening-season poll. Billings West, Billings Senior and Helena Capital round out the top six.

Bozeman returns three state champions from a runner-up finish last winter — Sterling Quinn, Leif Schroeder and Chance McLane — while Jaiden James and Coy Cohenour each placed second in their weight class in February. Tayt Rogers and Brock Rodrigues won the consolation portion of their respective brackets, both finishing third.

Rogers, Schroeder, McLane and Cohenour are each top-ranked in the current Class AA poll.

Great Falls High returns four state placers from last season, with Easton Shupe and Braeden Lomas each ranked second in their weight class. Butte’s Keagan Gransbery and Kameron Moreno topped their respective weight classes for coach Cory Johnston.

Two-time defending champion Kalispell Flathead went unranked in the team polls with Jaden MacNeil the highest returning placer after finishing runner-up in the 132-pound bracket last season. MacNeil is ranked No. 6 at 145. The Braves take the mats with a “young, young team” according to coach Jeff Thompson.
