CHURCHILL – The Class C state volleyball tournament kicks off this Thursday at Montana State University, and few teams are coming in with more momentum than Manhattan Christian.
The Eagles are fresh off winning the Western C divisional title last week in Churchill. They beat two of the top teams in the state, the Gardiner Bruins in the undefeated semifinal and the defending state champion Ennis Mustangs is the championship. Manhattan Christian has now proven it is a force to be reckoned with in Class C.
“I’ve been dreaming about going to state ever since I’ve watched the other teams that are older than me go to state when I was in elementary. Just getting into the championship was just so exciting,” said sophomore Taylor DeVries.
The win at the Western C solidifies Manhattan Christian as one of the top teams in the state, and the Eagles earned a No. 1 seed heading into this week’s tournament. But even though they are riding a high, they know that now is the time to buckle down. There is a good chance they will face a team like Ennis or North No. 1 Belt in the state tournament.
“I think we just really have to focus on just playing our game, because if we get off then we start to play bad. So we just have to focus and play as a team, because that’s definitely when we play our best, is when we play as a team,” said senior Kelsey Heidema.
The Eagles kick off the tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against Plentywood.
