KALISPELL – There were several records broken at the State B track and field meet in Kalispell, along with plenty of stories and personal triumphs.

But few athletes had to overcome the type of obstacles that Glasgow’s Brett Glaser encountered during his high school career on the way to the 2019 State B shot put title.

The Scottie senior underwent two back surgeries since his sophomore year and spent the majority of the 2019 season recovering from foot surgery which kept him from returning to top form in many of his events.

After finishing second in the triple jump at the 2018 state meet with a 44-foot, 5-inch leap, Glaser was limited this year and finished 18th in the event over the weekend, managing just 37 feet, 10.25 inches.

But while the injury clearly affected running and jumping, Glaser was able to compete and improve week to week in the throws. His state title-winning shot put toss of 46 feet, 11 inches was a personal record by nearly two feet.

“I relaxed, told myself, ‘This is what we trained for,’” Glaser said. “It was so many months and days being in the boot and cast, just trying to get back into things, so I told myself, ‘This isn’t for nothing. You’re here for a reason and you’re here to do well.’ I relaxed and had a good throw.”

A perfect way to cap off his high school career.

“Oh gosh, I can’t describe it. It’s that movie ending that you think of all the time: You’re down and out, but you can’t give up. You just can’t give up. You can’t give up for anything,” he said.

Glaser’s track and field career isn’t over, he’s committed to compete in the multi-events at North Dakota State.
