The high school track and field season has reached its pinnacle with the State AA and B meets to be held in Kalispell and the State A and C meets in Laurel this Thursday-Saturday.
Divisional track and field weekend represented the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for their respective state meets, whether it be by hitting qualifying standards or by placing high enough at the divisional meet to earn a berth at state.
Even with the inclement weather around the state, some athletes were able to post season-best marks. Dillon’s Dylan Cervelli ran the state’s fastest 400-meter dash, while Missoula Sentinel’s Jaden Foster became the first Class AA boy to run the 400 in less than 50 seconds this season.
Big Timber’s Casey Gunlikson looks to be locked in on the State B 100-meter dash record of 11.01 seconds. Gunlikson won the Southern B divisional meet with a time of 10.81 seconds.
Seeley-Swan sophomore Klaire Kovatch is within striking distance of the State C discus record after another mammoth toss this weekend. Teammate Terra Bertsch also pulled closer to the State C pole vault record, which she’ll take aim at in Laurel on Thursday evening.
Each classification now uses qualifying standards (which are included in parentheses next to each class in each event below) that give athletes an opportunity during the regular season to secure berths at their respective state meets. Athletes were still able to qualify for their state meets at their divisional meets. If athletes hit a qualifying standard at any point during the season, they’re guaranteed a spot at the state meet, regardless of their performance at the divisional meet.
