Helena Capital track teams sweep home triangular

HELENA — The Helena Capital boys and girls track and field teams swept the team titles at Saturday’s home triangular track meet with Missoula Big Sky and Great Falls High.

Helena Capital’s boys dominated on the track, winning five individual races. Bret Morris won the 100-meter dash in 11.12 seconds and placed second in the 200-meter dash. Shane Haller won the 400-meter dash in 53.03 seconds, freshman Tyler Jost won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 6.85 seconds, and Jeremiah Wamsley swept the hurdles, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 15.63 and the 300-meter hurdles in 40.94. The Bruins also won both the 400- and 1,600-meter relay races.

Capital was strong in the field, too. Haller added a victory in the long jump at 20 feet, 2 inches, Dawson Ziegler won the pole vault at 13-00 and the javelin at 152-11, and Mason Casagrande claimed the shot put with a toss of 43-09.

The Capital girls were dominant on the track, too. Audrey Bloomquist and Leigha Carter finished 1-2 in the 100 at 12.72 and 12.85, respectively. Teammate Sydney Sheridan then won the 200 in 26.54, with Carter finishing second and Bloomquist fourth. McKinlee Mihelish and Sheridan then finished 1-2 in the 400. Melissa Morenia added a victory in the 100 hurdles in 15.13 and the Bruins won the 400-meter relay in 50.04.

More points piled up in the field events, led by Bloomquist’s win in the triple jump. Bloomquist jumped 37-09 to narrowly edge Missoula Big Sky’s Whitney Morrison, who jumped 37-06.50. Both Bloomquist and Morrison are in the top five of Class AA this season in the event.

Jaden Kalchbrenner added a pair of wins for Capital in the shot put and discus. She threw the shot put 35-07 and threw the discus 104-01. Carlie Gross won the javelin with a throw of 101-10.
