BILLINGS – Now there are some real numbers for Montana’s 2019 track and field athletes to chase.

Nine new state-bests were set Saturday at the Billings Invitational, including three of the four relay races. Billings West broke both 400-meter relay marks, with the girls finishing in 49.7 seconds and the boys clocking in at 43.16.

Billings Senior’s girls also set the new 1,600-meter relay best in 4minutes, 10.38 seconds. Tiahna Vladic anchored the race, and also ran the best 800-meter race of the season with a 2:20.15 finish.

Senior finished second in the team race with 112.5 points, just behind West at 122.

Sidney had a big day in the field. The Eagles set both 2019 pole vault highs – Katie Berglund cleared 11 feet, 6 inches, while Wyatt Heringer became the first boy to clear 14 feet this year. Carter Hughes then beat both the previous shot put and discus marks. Hughes bettered his own shot put best with a 55-11.5, and then set the discus mark at 166-9. Billings West’s Carter Slade finished second at 160-2.

Finally, Huntley Project’s Brad Graves bettered his own 110-meter hurdles mark with a 14.77 second time. Graves is the defending State B champion after running a 14.64 at the State B meet last season.

Huntley Project (65) and Sidney (61) finished 2-3 in the team rankings, both a long way behind West, which won with 113. Billings Senior tied Sidney for third.
