The high school track and field season is in full swing as the remnants of winter fade away. Though its early in the year, there have already been a handful of athletes to qualify for their respective state meets by hitting qualifying standards.

Each classification now uses qualifying standards (which are included in parentheses next to each class in each event below) that give athletes an opportunity during the regular season to secure berths at their respective state tournaments. Athletes can still qualify for their state meets at their divisional meets, but that’s not a necessity. If athletes hit a qualifying standard at any point during the season, they’re guaranteed a spot at the state meet, regardless of their performance at the divisional meet.

Helena High’s Trey Tintinger continues to rack up the accolades, as he won the high jump at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles over the weekend. Tintinger’s jump of 6 feet, 11 inches is the top mark from a Montana athlete this year, but he has company near the top. Billings Skyview junior Julius Mims jumped 6-10 on his home track over the weekend, showing he may be a serious threat to Tintinger’s three-peat hopes.

Sidney’s Carter Hughes, who is looking for his third consecutive State A title in both the shot put and discus, made his season debut over the weekend. Hughes threw both the shot put and discus and now owns Class A’s season best in each. Hamilton’s Michael Graves is the early favorite in the Class A javelin, throwing a Montana best 186-04 at the Frenchtown Invitational.

A pair of female Montana jumpers had outstanding weekends. Missoula Sentinel’s Lauren Heggen booked a pair of top-10 finishes at the Arcadia Invitational and holds Montana’s best triple jump and second-best long jump. She’s behind only Bozeman’s Delaney Bahn in the long jump, as Bahn flew 18-08 at the 4B’s meet in Billings. Bahn also high jumped 5-05, tied with Glendive’s Karsen Murphy for the state’s best.

Dillon’s Tylia DeJohn has put herself back atop the Class A sprints. As a freshman, DeJohn finished third in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the State A meet. As a sophomore, DeJohn won the 200 and finished runner-up in the 100 to her teammate Hayle Sundquist, who has since graduated. DeJohn is the only sprinter in Class A to go below 13 seconds in the 100 so far.

Three-time Class A discus champion Calla Haldorson also got her season off on the right foot. Haldorson qualified for the State A meet in the discus over the weekend with a throw of 134-03 ½, the top mark in Montana.

The full lists of state-qualified athletes are below. These lists, while unofficial, are updated through the official results posted at www.athletic.net through April 8. If you notice an error or omission, please email sports@ktvh.com.
