Manhattan Christian sweeps opening rivalry series against Manhattan

MANHATTAN -- The Manhattan Christian boys and girls basketball teams opened their seasons with rivalry wins as they both defeated Manhattan Friday night.

The Eagles boys opened the night with commanding defense, holding the Tigers scoreless for the entire second quarter as they won 75-48. MCHS's Sam Leep had a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds, while senior Josiah Amunrud added 20 points, while going 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Manhattan's Caden Holgate was the Tigers' main offensive threat as he scored 21 points in the loss.

Manhattan Christian's girls completed the doubleheader sweep, defeating Manhattan 50-35. Sophomore Kiersten Van Kirk paced all scorers with 16 points. Eagles junior Eliana Kuperus recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hallie Hemenway went 4 for 5 from the field as she and Amy Grevious led the Tigers with eight points each. Grevious also had an impressive game-high nine steals for the Tigers.

Both Manhattan Christian teams are back in action on Saturday night as they host Whitehall. Meanwhile, Manhattan's next appearance will be at the Eagles' Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 13.
