LEWISTOWN — One thing in the sports world the COVID-19 pandemic can't prevent is high school athletes signing to continue their athletic careers in college, and now one of central Montana’s best distance runners is on his way.

Lewistown’s Sam Fulbright won the Class A boys cross country championship in the fall of 2019. Now he’s taking his talents to Moscow, Idaho to run for the University of Idaho after officially signing with the Vandals on Friday.

Fulbright figured to be a favorite for multiple distance state titles in track this spring. He’s disappointed his senior track season is on hold, but he’s still training hard, knowing that there will be something for him after the pandemic.

"We would have had a track meet (Saturday), actually, had the season been going as scheduled," Fulbright said. "So it's a little bit frustrating having been looking forward to this season, having my goals set high. But, you know, I'm still hopeful (Montana High School Association) will come out with their final say on (April) 13th. So all I can do is just keep training until then. And even if that doesn't work out, I still have another reason to train now. That’s for Idaho, so I’m really excited about that."
