The Laurel boys soccer team scored four second-half goals against Polson in the opening round of the State A soccer playoffs at the Laurel Sports Complex on Saturday to defeat the Pirates 4-0.
After a scoreless first half, Laurel finally broke through in the 46th minute. Matt Mosby centered a ball into the box, and Austin Purcell touch-passed to Bryce Adkins. Adkins was left one-on-one with the goalie and calmly found the back of the net.
Laurel then became to pour it on. Ethan Meccage broke away from the backline of Polson's defense and beat the keeper in the 56th minute to put the Locomotives up 2-0. Meccage added his second goal of the day just eight minutes later on a chip shot over the keeper's head to give Laurel a 3-0 lead.
The Locomotives weren't done, though, as Austin Purcell drew a penalty kick in stoppage time. Purcell drilled the PK to give Laurel a 4-0 lead. The final whistle sounded just seconds later, pushing Laurel through to the State A semifinals.
Laurel will visit Frenchtown in the semifinals next weekend. Frenchtown defeated Columbia Falls 6-5 in a shootout to advance.
