FAIRMONT HOT SPRINGS -- Kodie Hoagland knew she needed to make the most of the opportunity.
Walking down the fairway on the par-5 10th hole, Hoagland noticed the wind had briefly died, one of the few times the opportunity presented itself, and took advantage of the situation on a blistery, chilled second day of the Western AA divisional golf meet.
Hoagland birdied the hole, eventually elevating her to an 82 for the round and a two-day total of 166 to edge teammate Ella Prigge by two strokes for the Western AA medalist honor. Hoagland and Prigge carded identical 84s on Thursday to share the Day 1 lead.
Prigge matched her effort with an 84 on Friday, finishing runner-up, and the duo led the Butte girls to the divisional championship in their second year in the Western AA.
Kalispell Flathead's Marcella Mercer finished third (86-83--169).
Mercer's male counterpart at Flathead, Ezra Epperly, held onto his Day 1 lead to capture the divisional crown, shooting 73 Thursday and 76 Friday for a two-day total of 149. Missoula Sentinel's Kade McDonough was two back at 151.
Helena Capital's Caswell Bloomquist placed third with a 152.
Kalispell Glacier ran away with the team trophy, with Keaton Cassidy (157), Sam Manaker (157) and Tyler Avery (158) holding the next three spots on the leaderboard. The Wolfpack totaled 626 to defeat Sentinel (646) for the divisional trophy.
The top four teams, consisting of five athletes, and the next-best 10 individual scores, including ties, advance to the Class AA state invitational in Missoula next weekend.
