BOX ELDER – The defending champion Box Elder girls faced their toughest test of the year Friday night, needing overtime to defeat District 9C rival Fort Benton, 73-70.

Earlier this season, the Bears dominated the Longhorns on the road, but Fort Benton matched the intensity all night long.

It was a back-and-forth affair from the opening tip. Fort Benton (13-2, 9-2) led 18-17 after the first quarter, but the game was tied at 34 entering halftime, 52 after three quarters and was all square at 67 at the end of regulation.

The Longhorns had a chance to tie the game and force a second overtime, but Aspen Giese’s 3 was off the mark, keeping Box Elder (15-0, 11-0) undefeated.

The Fort Benton boys (14-1, 10-1) defeated Box Elder 66-60 in the nightcap.
