Defending champs lead initial MontanaSports.com girls basketball power rankings

Three defending state champions top the first edition of this season’s MontanaSports.com high school girls basketball power rankings.

Helena High (9-0), Havre (12-0) and Box Elder (12-0) have carried undefeated records deep into the 2018-19 season and top the initial rankings in Class AA, Class A and Class C, respectively. Townsend, the lone undefeated team remaining in Class B, tops the Class B poll.

MTN Sports voters were unanimous in their No. 1 rankings, and there was little debate beyond that. The voters unanimously agreed on the top five in Class AA — Helena High, Helena Capital, Butte, Billings West and Kalispell Glacier. There wasn’t much variation in the Class A rankings, either, as Browning, Columbia Falls, Laurel and Billings Central followed Havre in the poll.

Things were less straightforward in the Class B and C rankings, as eight teams received votes in both classifications. Wolf Point, Florence, Harlem and Whitehall ultimately completed Class B’s top five, while Malta, Forsyth and Shelby received votes.

Eastern C teams Savage, Froid-Medicine Lake and Scobey slotted in behind Box Elder in the Class C rankings, with Belt and Fort Benton tying for the fifth spot. Ennis and Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap also received votes.
