Power sweeps Sunburst, Jessie Maruska eclipses 1,000 career points

POWER — Power swept Sunburst in a boys and girls basketball doubleheader on Thursday, with the Power girls running away to a 82-27 win and the Power boys winning 54-53 on a game-winning shot from Gaice Blackwell.

GIRLS: POWER 82, SUNBURST 27

Entering Thursday’s game against Sunburst, Power senior Jessie Maruska had scored 981 career points and needed 19 points to reach 1,000.

By halftime, she had 17 points and reached the millennial mark early in the third quarter on a steal and layup, but she didn’t stop there.

Maruska scored 18 in the third quarter to finish with 35 for the game, leading the Pirates to a 82-27 win over the Refiners. Monique Scwhalbach, an eighth grader, added 16 points for Power to join Maruska in double figures.

Jeena Alborano led Sunburst with nine points in defeat.

BOYS: POWER 54, SUNBURST 53

Gaice Blackwell scored 16 points, including the game-winning field goal, while Brady Smelser added 15 to lead the Power boys to a hard fought 54-53 win over Sunburst.

The Refiners led 14-11 after the first quarter, and 22-20 at halftime but the Pirates pulled ahead in the third quarter and held off a rally.

Stanley Jarvis led all scorers with 22 points for Sunburst in defeat. Mike Buckley added nine points, with Cody Smith pitching in eight.
