TWIN BRIDGES — Brayden Oberg’s 3-yard touchdown run with just 1:28 remaining pushed Ennis to victory over rival Twin Bridges, 22-20, in 8-Man football action Friday night to claim the 8-Man South’s final playoff spot.
Ennis took possession trailing 20-16 with 4:49 to play. A steady diet of Oberg and Daniel Johnson put Ennis inside the 5-yard line with less than two minutes to play. Denied earlier in the night inside the 10, Oberg put his head down and plowed through contact for the winning score.
Twin Bridges opened the scoring when wide receiver Jake Hughes took a snap out of the Wildcat formation and followed his blockers for a 7-yard score. Following Oberg’s first touchdown run of the night, Hughes again scored, this time returning the ensuing kickoff 65 yards.
Leading 14-8 with time winding down in the first quarter, Hughes again took a snap out of the Wildcat. This time, Hughes faked a pitch on the speed option before catching the edge and turning the corner for a 62-yard touchdown, putting the Falcons up 20-8. Rusty Lucas pulled Ennis within 20-16 at halftime with a 2-yard touchdown run at the end of the second quarter.
The teams played to a stalemate in the third quarter, trading punts and battling for field position. On Ennis’ final drive, the Mustangs faced a 3rd-and-long they needed to convert. Not called upon often on Friday night, quarterback Trevor Swanson threw a beautiful ball up the seam to Lucas to put Ennis inside the Twin 30-yard line.
Ennis will have a bye next week before starting the playoffs on the road. Twin Bridges sees its season end.
