Class AA football roundup: Billings West holds off Helena Capital

HELENA — DeMarcus Carr had two touchdowns and the Billings West defense forced four turnovers to help lift the Golden Bears to a 14-10 Class AA football win over Helena Capital at Vigilante Stadium on Friday.

The Bruins got on the board first with a short field goal from Brian Buschini, but Carr would give West a lead it would never relinquish early in the second. Carr, who worked behind the left side of his offensive line all game, took a carry 27 yards down the left sideline to get the Bears on the board. He added another scoring run, this one from inside the Bruins’ 5-yard line, later in the second to give West a 14-3 lead at halftime.

Capital would make things interesting, though. The Bruins drove the length of the field, getting inside the West red zone late in the third quarter. They went to their bag of tricks, perfectly executing a wide receiver reverse pass with Dawson Ziegler finding quarterback Bridger Grovom for the touchdown. That would pull Capital within 14-10 going to the fourth.

But the Bears’ defense would prevent Capital from overcoming the gap as Kade Wilcox snagged an interception in the waning minutes to preserve the win. West improves to 6-1, while Capital falls to 3-4.
