BUTTE – On a cool evening at Bob Green Field, the Butte Central Maroons opened up their season at home against Ronan and they left 1-0, defeating the Chiefs 45-13.

The Maroons were all over the Chiefs early, with the defense and special teams being showcased. Braden Harrington blocked a punt five minutes into the game, which was recovered by the Maroons’ Egan Lester.

That gave way to Cade Holter on the ensuing drive. Holter threw up a long ball, which was pulled in by Matt Simkins on his fingertips for a 51-yard score to put Butte Central up 7-0. Holter would run one in himself a couple possessions later.

Not even a minute into the second quarter, Seth Gardner picked up a muffed snap and rumbled and stumbled his way into the end zone. The big man showcased some dance moves in the end zone, which got the Maroons’ bench pumped up, putting them up 19-0.

From then on the Maroons did not let off the gas pedal, completely controlling the game. With the first game behind them, Butte Central now heads to the road to take on Whitefish Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
