Missoula Loyola shows depth on run to become MontanaSports.com Class B all-sports champion

Missoula Loyola showed its depth and talent across a range of sports this school year, especially during the spring. So, when we counted up each Montana High School Association state championship, handing out 10 points for a title, seven points for second place, six points for third place, down to one point for an eighth-place finish, the Rams and Breakers topped the list.

This is the third consecutive year Loyola has won our title, and it did it with significantly more points this time. The Rams and Breakers totaled 69 in our system after winning Class B with 47 points in 2017-18 and 42.5 points in 2016-17. Loyola won boys golf, girls golf and girls tennis state titles a couple weeks ago, but it also placed top eight in 11 different sports, including boys and girls soccer playing up at the Class A level. Football, girls and boys basketball, and boys tennis all captured top-three finishes in state tournaments.

In contrast, second-place Huntley Project won four state championships, including three just last week: softball and boys and girls track and field to go with a volleyball title in November. But the Red Devils placed in only eight total sports. Huntley Project took third a year ago but finished ahead of last-year’s runner-up.

Bigfork finished one spot lower in third thanks to another boys basketball title. A wrestling championship helped Colstrip capture fourth place. Manhattan started with a big lead after winning both boys and girls cross country crowns in October. The Tigers totaled 11 points the rest of the year to finish in fifth.

We’ll reveal the Class C all-sports champions Thursday.
