Another year of high school sports is in the books. Now let’s look at the big picture.
We added up results from every Montana High School Association championship this school year, giving 10 points for a state title, seven points for second place, six points for third, down to one point for an eighth-place finish. In Class AA, the Hawks took the top perch once again.
Bozeman dominated to become the MontanaSports.com Class AA all-sports champion. The Hawks have won this award every year we have handed it out. Bozeman won state championships in boys and girls golf, boys cross country, boys soccer, wrestling, boys basketball, girls tennis and girls track and field. They had high finishes in many other sports to total 125.5 points. That’s 39 ahead of second place. Overall, the Hawks received points for top-eight finishes in 15 of a possible 18 sports.
Billings West actually captured points in 16 of 18 sports, but the Golden Bears claimed only a single state championship in football. Altogether, it was enough for West to hold off Missoula Hellgate for second place, a jump of five spots from the Golden Bears’ seventh-place finish a year ago. Hellgate climbed one spot to join the top three. The Knights once again won boys and girls swimming championships to go with a girls cross country crown.
Billings Senior held off Missoula Sentinel and Helena High in a close race for fourth, although the Broncs didn’t win a championship during this school year. Sentinel made a run late with boys tennis and boys track and field titles in the final two weeks. Helena won another girls basketball championship.
We will reveal the Class A all-sports champion on Tuesday, with Class B following on Wednesday and Class C on Thursday.
